The client wished to maximise value through collaborative working pratices and adopted BIM as the framework for project delivery. Project workflows were coordinated within a Common Data Environment aligned to PAS1192-2:2013 and the project was fully documented in 3D. Utilising an Open BIM methodology, all design team members were able to collaborate seamlessly with a variety of software applications.

The engineering presented many challenges and the building is designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’. It is within this context that the design solutions have been developed. Demiurgic Consulting Engineers worked closely with the contractor and the design team to formulate robust design solutions drawing on best practice approaches and introducing innovative, holistic solutions, fully considered to meet the needs of the client and design team partners.

The classroom spaces are provided with low energy hybrid ventilation systems and integrated heating. These are incorporated locally within the space they serve utilising top and side ventilators integrated in the window construction.

Exposed soffits improve passive effect and form part of the night cooling strategy. The lighting incorporates suspended linear LED strip lights with absence detection and daylight linked dimming is provided to the row of lights adjacent to the windows throughout the space.

The LRC utilised a 3 pipe energy efficient combined heating and cooling VRF technology to provide comfort control assisted with MVHR heat recovery ventilation system for fresh air within the space.
