University Hospital Southampton

The project incorporates the remodelling, upgrade and refurbishment of Paediatric Oncology (Piam Brown) Ward at University Hospital Southampton.

From the outset, high levels of stakeholder engagement with key clinical staff and hospital leads were essential to allow our team to gain an understanding of how the space would be used, it’s integration into the day to day functioning of the hospital, staff working arrangements and the specialist requirements of the paediatric oncology unit.

The dual use of the ward, as both a day unit and an inpatient ward, provided an additional level of complexity as the shared space needed to be sensitive to the needs of all it’s patients, whilst ensuring strict Infection Control levels were not compromised.

All works were successfully completed within the fast-track programme desired by the hospital and the ward was officially opened by the Duchess of Cornwall.

The ward, which provides for approximately 120 new patients each year, is one of only twenty specialist paediatric oncology units in the United Kingdom and caters for a range of ages from 16 years old to new born babies.

Works comprised treatment room, 3 bed recovery area, eight new single bedrooms with en-suites, two new two-bed bays, a new bathroom, wet room and toilet, as well as refurbishment of the existing corridors, bays, admin and clinical areas.
