Smile Respite Centre, Waterlooville

Smile Support & Care who provide respite care and support services to families with disabled children and young adults proposed a purpose built facility to accommodate two family apartments plus eight specially equipped bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

The building and services design is highly sustainable and included:

  • Photovoltaic Cells – contribute to power and lighting
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps – provide space heating and hot water
  • Solar water heating – provide hot water and space heating
  • Wind Catchers – provide alternative cooling and ventilation
  • Rain Water Harvesting – used for irrigation and flushing toilets
  • Brise Soleil and white walls – deflect and reflect sunlight
  • Sun Pipes – light corridors
  • Green Roof – attenuates rain water flow and provides additional insulation
  • High levels of insulation – reduce energy consumption

The accommodation was to give children and young adults with severe disabilities the opportunity to stay either with their families or carers at the centre.

All rooms were specially designed to provide the highest specification of fixtures and fittings appropriate to the needs of the occupants, whilst retaining a hotel-like ambience.
