Netley Chapel, Southampton

The iconic Netley Chapel stands on the edge of Southampton Water and within the beautiful Royal Victoria Country Park. The Grade II* listed Chapel is currently utilised as an informal heritage centre.

The project supported with HLF includes a combination of conservation works, repairs, access improvements, exhibition interpretation works, fire safety improvement works, staff and visitor facilities plus the replacement of the building services installations which includes:

  • New heating water services and internal drainage.
  • Natural ventilation strategy including existing windows with stack effect ducts with motorised dampers located in the Chapel roof void connecting to existing louvred roof turrets.
  • New electrical infrastructure and internal lighting utilising LED lamps.
  • New fire alarm and detection system including high sensitivity smoke detection system.
  • IT provisions for general use, exhibitions, sound and light.

The project has several intentions including multiple use of the Chapel with permanent and temporary exhibitions. The reception/lobby space will be reconfigured to enhance visitor arrival plus new low impact entrance and facilities building.

The permanent exhibition designed in such a way that it can be removed to allow the Chapel in addition to display and interpretation to also be used for performance, learning and special events/private hire (with a maximum capacity of 440 guests).
